If you’re anything like me this is how it usually goes down: You’ve been super good with eating and exercising for the week and boom: someone wants to meet for dinner or happy hour. While you’re thrilled someone wants to actually hang out, you’re also thinking: “Great now I’m going to blow all my hard work on a spinach artichoke dip that has enough calories for a teenage swim team”.
Well, calm down!
I have some tips to stay on track while you’re out on the town catching up with Tonya and Peter.
- Pre-check out the menu. There is this thing that was created a long, long time ago: The internet. Get on the wild web, look at the restaurant menu beforehand and have a plan. That way you are already committed to what you are having before you get there. Stop looking at the spin dip!
- Be mindful. Instead of inhaling your meal within seconds, take the time to chew your food and eat slow. Naturally, fullness takes some time to register. Besides, you and Tonya have tons to talk about, so graze, slow down, and enjoy yourself. You will find you will become full.
- Choose smart sides. In this day, the side options are generally endless. Instead of choosing French fries or onion rings. Simply say salad or sautéed veg. You will thank me when you’re walking out to your car not feeling like the Michelin man.
- When I dip, you dip, we dip. This one is the oldest trick in the book, but still relevant. Instead of ordering your salad dressed. Order the dressing on the side and dress it yourself with the old dip method. You may even want to think about subbing out a dressing for a lighter alternative. Dressings are notorious for having an extreme amount of calories. Ask your server for your options and choose wisely!
- Lastly, if you are going to enjoy a cocktail, stick to the basics. Mixers are the dressing of drinks and contains a ton of sugars and additives. Opt for a glass of red wine, vodka soda & lime, tequila on the rocks… etc. Just because Peter has a Cadillac Margarita, doesn’t mean you have to.
Obviously from time to time, it’s good to treat yourself when going out to eat. But, if you stick to these tips during your weekly routine, you’re staying right on track!
